Summer at LifeSkills Academy

An Intensive Summer Program For The Child, grades K- 4, Who Needs An Extra Academic Boost To Better Succeed At School In The Fall

THE GOAL OF LIFESKILLS ACADEMY’S SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
To academically, socially, and behaviorally prepare a child who has the potential for mainstream kindergarten thru 4th grade but who has not developed the necessary skills through a typical school program. It is an intensive, therapeutic daily session. The foundational developmental theories, therapies and activities, which are used, have been repeatedly and consistently successful in changing a child's behavioral, social and academic skills and their ability to process.

WHY SOME CHILDREN STRUGGLE
The brain has many parts, some for thinking and some for making the body ready to carry out assigned tasks. When the body does not automatically perform a given task, the thinking brain must take over and consistently give directions to the body. It's frustrating for a child to have to think and consciously plan what other children can do automatically.

SENSORY INTEGRATION AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT IN EDUCATION
Sensory Integration is our body's ability to function well in its environment. It is to the brain what synchronized software is to the computer: It sets the brain up to work and use its potential. Distractibility, poor fine motor skills, and inconsistent performance are signs that the "software" is not synchronized; it does not consistently relay the message to the higher brain.

AGE OF THE CHILD
This program is for children, ages 4 thru 10, who are not comfortably ready for the Fall's academic program.

TEACHING & THERAPY STAFF
The LifeSkills Academy staff includes teachers, aides and therapists, who have over 50 years of combined experience. Our staff collaboratively develops the curriculum of academics, language, behavioral and social skills.

CLASS SIZE
Classes are limited to eight children. A teacher and assistant provide a one to four ratio - adult to children.

INDIVIDUAL THERAPY SESSIONS
One-on-one therapy allows the child with particular areas of difficulty to receive extra individual help to improve. Coordination between the classroom teacher and the treating therapist works to the benefit of the child. The child's individual needs can be individually worked on in one-to-one therapy sessions and therapy progress can be incorporated within the classroom.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
• The child receives individualized sessions of occupational and/or speech-language therapy during the LifeSkills Academy program.
• Children will benefit from feeding, articulation, and socialization skills. “Picky eating” is also addressed.

DIGITAL AUDITORY AEROBICS
Before starting, parents are encouraged to have their child complete the Digital Auditory Aerobics (DAA) program at an additional cost. This auditory training program has successfully helped to better prepare children for academics. Call LifeSkills at 407-629-9455 for more details.

COST OF THE PROGRAM
Please refer to the summer costs page for the price of the program for your child's age group. One-half of the fee is due upon signing the agreement to participate in the program, and the other half is due by the first day of class. These are private pay programs; insurance is not accepted and insurance claims are not provided. Parents must provide the child with a snack each day.

HOW TO ENROLL YOUR CHILD
Call 407-629-9455 to receive an enrollment packet. Once completed, you and your child will come to LifeSkills for a screening to determine if these programs are appropriate for your child.

If any of these, or similar behaviors, have you really concerned about your child’s ability to perform in school, this program can help.

•Your child needs help with fine motor skills; his writing, dressing, and eating skills are below expectations.
•Is bright but works harder than his peers.
•Has difficulty hearing phonemic differences in words such as “oat” and “oak” or “talk” and “dock.” Such problems can negatively impact a child's ability to follow directives, read, spell and write.
•Doesn't know how to get along with others; seems immature for her age.
•Doesn't transition well.
•Unable to maintain attention, focus, listen, process and retain information long enough to complete a given task.
•Has auditory hypersensitivity – may cover ears to block “noise” or becomes irritable with noise.
•Gets overwhelmed easily, frequently.
•Is clingy, whiny, or doesn't behave.
•Is getting worse the older he gets.
•Everyone says, “Don't worry…he'll grow out of it.” You are worried.
• “Melts down” – kicks, screams, has tantrums and bothers other kids.
•Has low self-confidence.

An Outstanding Academic Summer Enrichment Program That Works Like No Other

Remember the last time you had a day when everything was closing in around you and you felt like you were going to explode? For a young child with a classroom struggle, every hour of every school day can be a frustrating experience. The anxiety builds, the stress becomes overwhelming and some children explode, others implode.

If you're reading this, you probably know a child, perhaps your own child, who, for some unknown reason, can't succeed in the classroom. For the most part, they're probably very bright and have a lot of potential, but they just can't stay on task. They're struggling with the demands of being in their classroom.

LifeSkills is a multi-therapy clinic that has been helping children who can't be figured out…the ones who are “out-of-sync” and are falling “through the cracks.”

Our goal is to prepare a child to function in a regular classroom and we do this by treating the cause of a child's problem.
