LifeSkills Academy
LifeSkills Academy is a transitional, intensive academic and therapeutic
school for children with Sensory Processing Disorder, Asperger's Syndrome,
Autism, Speech/language delays, Non-Verbal learning disabilities and other
learning disabilities.
OUR MISSION
To academically, socially, and behaviorally prepare a child who has the
potential for mainstream kindergarten through 4th grade but who has not
developed the necessary skills through a typical school program. It is
based in educational and therapeutic theories which change a child's academic
and behavioral skills.
OUR FOCUS
Our proven program improves the student's ability in the following areas:
- Academics
- Transitioning
- Maintaining attention, focus, listening skills, processing and retaining
information to complete assigned tasks
- Sequencing steps of a task
- Ability to write and complete an assignment
- Screening out extraneous noises
- Socialization and friendships
- Self-esteem
- Language and communication
WHY SOME CHILDREN STRUGGLE
The brain has many parts, some for thinking and some for making the body
ready to carry out assigned tasks. When the body does not automatically
perform a given task, the thinking brain must take over and give directions
to the body. It is frustrating and academically impossible for a child
to have to think and consistently plan what others do automatically and
meet the academic and social challenges of the classroom.
TEACHING & THERAPY STAFF
LifeSkills Academy staff includes Certified Master's Level teachers,
highly trained classroom aides, Licensed Occupational and Speech/language
Therapists, who combined have more than 50 years of experience. LifeSkills
Academy staff collaboratively develops the curriculum of academics, speech/language
development and processing skills.
ACADEMICS AT LIFESKILLS ACADEMY
At LifeSkills Academy, a wide range of curriculum is used to allow the
teacher to gear lessons to the individual needs of the student. The curriculum
comes from some of the more well known publishers such as McGraw-Hill
and Houghton-Mifflin and from newer programs such as Evan-Moor, Modern
Curriculum Press, Great Leaps and Scholastic. The freedom of using several
sources of material allows the teachers to pull the best from each to
create creative, interesting, and appropriate lessons.
LifeSkills Academy teaches the core subjects such as Reading, Math, Social
Studies, Science, Spelling, and English. In addition, there are opportunities
for arts and crafts, field trips, and special events. Our mission is to
help your child work to his/her potential in an environment that is fun,
creative, challenging, and academically sound.
